After nearly getting into a fight with his ex-wife’s new boyfriend, Charlie decides to return to therapy. But he just happens to be sleeping with the only therapist he trusts – his best friend, Kate. The new ‘evolved’ Charlie has to deal with a ghost from his old carousing, baseball-playing days when a woman he slept with just to break a batting slump shows up as a new patient in group therapy. Charlie challenges his group to do 36 hours of sleep deprivation therapy so that their ‘inhibitions come down and the truth comes out’. Unfortunately, the results turn out to be the exact opposite. A long-standing rivalry over who is the better therapist leads to all-out hostilities when Kate steals Patrick, one of Charlie’s group patients.
Are ‘swipe left’ dating apps bad for our mental health?
By Judith Silverstein, Michael Lasky. The Internet is a strange place, and what seems abnormal for in-person experiences is completely common on the Internet. Notice that the word is common, not polite or considerate. You need to know how to dish out rejection in an appropriate way. As with real life, you must do it quickly — and with a modicum of kindness, if possible.
Granted, for some people, a more heavy-handed approach is necessary.
I don’t want you to glance through this article, because if you’re single, this is by far the most important thing you’ve ever read in your life. If you can write that down right now, write the one word that describes how you feel in your dating life right now. Over the last couple of years, I’ve noticed a really disturbing trend when it comes down to dating. The word that we used to have a long time ago, before the flood of Internet dating sites and dating apps and social media validation.
The word that people used to use in dating was a magical word, it was called hope. If you’re a woman reading this article right now, I want you to think, when was the last time a man came over and approached you and flirted with you? If you’re a man reading this, I want you to think, when was the last time you actually walked over and actually took a dare and flirted with a woman? I want you to also ask yourself this question: when you’re out in public, how often do you look at your cell phone?
We’ve become a dating culture – especially in the western world – of people who are swiping and hoping that they’ll stumble across the right photo, the right picture, the perfect person. Dating has become a paradoxic choice. It’s almost like shopping on Amazon. You take a look, you read the reviews and you see if – after reading reviews from random strangers – this is the perfect thing for you. And don’t even get me started on how dating is only a review away. Pretty soon there’s going to be a review site, a major one, a major breakthrough where people will post about their exes, and then you’re going to find out the truth about everybody and the next thing you know, it’s going to feed this dating anger even more.

Dating apps are hugely popular around the world, but some think they’re making many of us unhappy.
However, no funding was received for the material featured in this article. This summer, I wrote a story for The Conversation about my experiences using Bumble, a self-described feminist dating app where women make the first move. I also expressed my disappointment in the lack of sexy, equitable connections Bumble generated for me — connections promised in its marketing campaigns when I signed up. As a woman seeking fun and romance, I found my Bumble journey quite frustrating.
But as a researcher interested in gender, sexuality and digital dating practices, I found it fascinating. My dual identities as a woman and a researcher surfaced again as I read the comments on my article and saw the reactions on social media. Given the feminist analysis in my story, I anticipated some backlash. I have experienced similar push-back in my research on sex work , an issue that can illicit charged emotional responses.

In the comments, readers accused me of following a feminist agenda meant to demean men and their dating experiences. Readers scoffed at my complaints of meeting only 10 guys in five months, an outcome they said exceeds that of most men.
The story is full of errors and misquotes but was still picked up by several far-right websites and spawned a Reddit thread , which is essentially a diatribe against feminism, and also, me. Many of the comments followed this pattern: they focused less on the content of the story and more on me. I was described as a man-hating woman who is after male power, unappealing to real men and in all likelihood a lesbian.

But in a way, those messages are alarmingly representative of general trends in the online dating universe. As long as certain dating sites look like toned down versions of their X-rated counterparts, men may not exactly be messaging women in the most respectful frame of mind. More recently, a plethora of market-minded dating books are coaching singles on how to seal a romantic deal, and dating apps, which have rapidly become the mode du jour for single people to meet each other, make sex and romance even more like shopping. The idea that a population of single people can be analyzed like a market might be useful to some extent to sociologists or economists, but the widespread adoption of it by single people themselves can result in a warped outlook on love. M oira Weigel , the author of Labor of Love: The Invention of Dating , argues that dating as we know it—single people going out together to restaurants, bars, movies, and other commercial or semicommercial spaces—came about in the late 19th century.
